Robots & Rats

I saw Transformers the other night. SPOILERS PROBABLY FOLLOW.

I actually really liked it... for about the first third of the movie. Shia LaBeouf's character was actually really well done and all the human elements were really pretty enjoyable up to that point. But about a third of the way into the movie, the Autobots arrived and from then on most of the movie sucked, with the notable exception of John Turturro. Let me say that I am a dude who loves robots, especially giant killer ones. And my love for them is not exclusive to the Transformers as depicted in the cartoons of my youth. But I hated hated HATED the robots in this movie almost without exception. They just didn't look cool at all. I talked about Megatron the other day, but I was actually like the least annoyed by him. They gave Optimus Prime lips. Maybe that doesn't sound like a big deal, but it made him look so retarded. All of them looked retarded, and worse yet, they acted like retards. They made the robots, particularly the Autobots (that's the good guys) stupid and weak. Optimus Prime couldn't do ANYthing when he fought Megatron.

Ugh. I know it's silly to get worked up about changes to characters from half-hour toy commercials in the 80s, but man those were some awesome toys! And my biggest gripe isn't that they changed things -- it's that they changed things to be really lame. The boom box robot in the movie (who was decidedly not Soundwave) was like a retarded gremlin. Man I could go on for a long time about how lame they made the robots. I even thought the robot fights were mostly dumb and boring.

But back to the point, the movie was really good in the beginning and then got lame from the second act on. All the humans started getting stupid lines after that point too, espcecially towards the end. I'm probably in the minority on this, but I cannot recommend Transformers.

I also saw Ratatouille yesterday. It was pretty good! It's about a rat that can cook. It's by the guy who did The Incredibles, but it wasn't as good as that. Still good though!
